Genre Decision: Thriller!

 Hello!

After researching all three genres, Wedecided to go with the thriller genre as it fits our concept for the movie the best.

With genre 1, action, it would be too difficult to include into our concept in the short few minutes we have. One of the biggest issues we had with the action genre was that many of the movies follow the conventions almost perfectly, and we would like some creative freedom. Furthermore, a common sound convention is that studios will hire artists to create custom soundtracks for them. We simply don't have the means for that, finding the "right" soundtrack while keeping to the conventions will prove difficult. Moreover, action movies just don't hold the same type of feeling we are trying to invoke. We want the audience to be on the edge of their seat, not knowing what will come next, rather than combat scenes.

Genre 2, horror, we decided against as the qualifications for a movie to be a horror movie proved very different from our vision. The main thing is that horror movies must include some kind of fear factor, whether it is jumpscares or a chasing scene, they must invoke fear in the audience. Our idea for the movie isn't necessarily something with jumpscares and crazy killers, but rather something that invokes anticipation in the audience. While horror movies and thrillers get confused with each other quite often, the biggest differentiator is how they aim to make their audience feel. Horror movies aim to make their audience scared, to make them fear what comes next while thrillers provide unexpected twists, suspensions, and anticipation.

Thrillers are our number-one choice as our idea works best as a thriller. Camera Angles were one of my favorite parts of thrillers as it adds dimension to the feelings of the characters without explicitly stating them. For example, a high angle over the victim shows how they feel powerless in their situation. While we have some doubts about how we are going to work things, I believe that although we will have to make substitutions for certain things, we can make it work.

Ultimately, a thriller is the best option for us. Horror movies provide a more fearful factor than we are looking for. Action movies simply don't fit the feel of the movie we are looking for. The suspense the thriller genre adds gives the story the kind of depth we are looking for that we can achieve with the other genres.
