Planning Blog: Storyboards Galore!

Hello again!

Here is the outline of all of our scenes:

  1. The first shot will be a black screen to introduce the movie's opening. This serves simply to present that it is beginning.

  1. The next shot will show a medium close-up of dumping sugar into a clean mixing bowl. This is such a benign opening, combined with the audio, it will introduce an air of suspense.

  1. Thirdly, there will be a birds-eye of the character mixing the bowl at a medium shot. Once again, it is a very monotonous opening the audience will be set on edge waiting for the introduction of more genre-like elements. At the end of this, the woman’s hands will become shaky as it switches to the next scene.

  1. The lighting will become darker as it switches to a scene of a husband beating the character and his wife with drowned-out screams in the background. This will be a medium-long shot from an eye-level angle. This not only provides background context but interests the audience as they become emotional at the sight of the abuse.

  1. The fifth shot will be a long shot high angle of the main character crying with the same lighting to show this is immediately after the abuse scene. This continues the introduction of thriller genre elements with the upsetting scenes, bringing out the audience’s emotional side.

  1. It will then switch back to baking where the woman cracks an egg in the bowl. This will be a close-up from a high angle. This will be a strange transition that jerks the audience out of the scene back to the more monotonous one, leaving them wondering about the connection between the two.

  1. Seventh, it will show a quick wide shot of empty cupcake tins from a birds-eye angle. This scene is fairly dull but serves to leave the audience on edge, waiting for action.

  1. Next, it will switch to an over-the-shoulder shot of the main character from a high angle. This same anticipation carries into this scene as the titles continue to play in the corner of the screen.

  1. Following, the woman will pour the batter into the baking tin; This will be a medium shot from a birds-eye panning to follow her pouring the batter.  The birds-eye introduces a feeling of insignificance with the cupcakes which is juxtaposed with the focus on it throughout the previous scenes.

  1. The next shot will show her placing it in the oven in a POV shot as a medium close-up. This places the audience in the wife’s shoes which makes her a very personal character with whom the audience associates.

  1. Using an action match, the woman will pull out the cupcakes in the same motion. This serves to add to the previous feeling but also builds suspense with the matching clips.

  1. Then, it will switch to show her pouring a mystery material into the cupcake frosting as she mixes it which will be a high-angle close-up shot. This is the most important clip as it introduces the poison and gives an air of mystery to the cupcakes as the audience wonders what it is.

  1. Next, as a close-up, frosting is piped on top of the cupcakes from a high angle. This builds on the suspense of the previous scene as the audience continues to wonder what is happening.

  1. The scene switches to a dining room where a man is sitting smiling, drinking alcohol as a wide shot. There are decorations around him signifying it is his birthday, introducing the context of baking the cupcakes.

  1. It will switch to a low shot of the same man which places him in a power position adding to the previous abuse shown, creating a disliked character.

  1. The next shot will be a medium shot pan as the wife walks into the dining room with a lit cupcake. The room has relatively dark lighting. This creates suspense as the audience begins to anticipate action.

  1. Second, to the end, the audience will see the husband get mad at his wife, dropping his smile as the cupcake is placed in front of him. This will be a medium shot which creates an impersonal view of the scene.

  1. Concluding, the scene will slowly zoom out on the man as the title fades in as he becomes farther and farther away, which as the audience is unaware is a signifier of his death, symbolizing him moving farther away.

Thank you so much!
