Not My Film School Thesis but Acceptable

Today was my first day of filming! It went well and I was able to finish it all in one go! My scenes are split between outside and inside scenes, so I did the outside ones today because of the nice weather.

Doing it at sunset time, the video had great lighting that made it easier. Due to issues with timing, I was the actor which meant I needed my mother to film me. She does not have experience with cameras, so eliminating the need for specific angles for light made it much easier to teach her how to do it. This also resulted in very neutral lighting which will make it easier for me to edit later on in the process.

I had to change the last skateboard scene slightly. My skateboard turned out to be broken which meant I could not use it. After consideration, I decided the skateboard could be discarded as it added to the aesthetic, not defined it. While I am not sure of other countries, there is an association between teenage musicians and skateboarding as a stereotype in mainstream American culture. However, I found adding flannel instead to my outfit created a similar effect. This change I feel did not do much to edit my video, only a minor change.

The dancing scene was easier to film because they were a much more simple setup. There was a slight issue with my shoulder leaving the scene because my pirouette was off-kilter. However, I have reshot that scene yet because I want to see how it looks with editing. As the overriding theme of the song and video is being okay with messing up, the turn might actually improve the video. On other hand, it might degrade the quality of the video, so that is yet to be seen.

Overall, I am very proud of how these scenes came out. I would have shot the inside scenes as well, but it was too late for natural light which is much superior in filming. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out given my cameraman had little experience and I was an actor and director, but it turned out well!

That’s all for now! Signing Off!
