Genre Research: Thriller

 Hello!

The thriller genre is a broad type of drama that consists of suspense, tension, and anticipation

to engage the audience. Thrillers feature a battle between a protagonist and an antagonist with

something that throws the balance of it off, a series of bad events.

Camera Angles:

    -  High angles are typically used to show the power imbalance between the set antagonist and

protagonist.  It shows the vulnerability of the victim, portraying them as weak and powerless.

                - Bird's Eye shots are sometimes also used to achieve this effect.

    - Close-up shots are typically used to see the reaction on the actor's face in response to an important

moment. For example, when a major character's death occurs, a close-up shot may occur to show the

other character's reaction toward it.

    - Tracking shots follow a specific object in motion. In thrillers, important characters are often tracked

in order to build suspense.

    - Low angles are often used to emphasize how scary/intimidating a villain is. It makes the watcher

feel weak in contrast to the villain hovering over them.

Mis-en-Scene:

   - Characters in thriller films often begin the film in nice-looking clothes, which happen to get dirtier

and dirtier throughout the film. This is done to illustrate the journey of the character, with each mark

representing some event.

   - Lighting in thriller movies is often dark and gloomy. This is done to reflect the circumstances the

characters were put in.

    - The acting in thriller movies is often serious and fearful which reflects the situations they were put in.

    - Props commonly used in thrillers are weapons such as guns, knives, etc.  This is used to further the

violence in the film.

    - The set often reflects where the thriller is set, for example, if it is a movie about teenagers exploration into haunted places, they may go to a house where a murder happened, or an abandoned asylum.

Editing:

    - Thriller movies often utilize shot reverse shots. This can be used in a multitude of ways, for example,

during an altercation between two characters shot reverse shot would be used to show what each

character is doing and provides insight into their plans.

- Thriller movies also utilize action match shots in order to provide a clean transition between two settings.

Examples of Films:

- The Menu (2022)

- M3GAN (2022)

- The Black Phone (2021)

Positive Elements:

The elements of the film which appeal to me are the way the camera angles are used to contrast

the powerful versus the powerless.  Furthermore, I really like the thriller genre as a whole as it is a

fun way to engage your audience, and out of all the genres we researched, I believe this will be the

most fun to execute.

Negative Elements:

However,  while I like all elements of thrillers they may be difficult to execute, especially when in

reference to the props; specifically, weaponry will require a lot of creativity to see what to do.

Furthermore, thrillers often are dark and gloomy, which makes it hard to distinguish what is happening.

If I were to do a thriller, I would for sure break this convention so that some scenes aren't as hard to see,

I believe this will make the movie overall more enjoyable.
